Fall in Love with Fitness: Simplify, Have Fun, and Embrace the Joy of Movement

Discover a Refreshing Approach to Exercise that Transforms Dread into Delight

If the thought of hitting the gym fills you with dread, you're not alone.

Many of us struggle to find enjoyment in traditional workouts. But what if exercise could be something you look forward to?

The key is to simplify, make it fun, and focus on how it makes you feel rather than strict metrics.

Let's explore how you can fall in love with movement and transform your fitness routine into a source of joy.

1. Start Small and Simple

  • Ease Into It: Begin with short workouts. Even 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week can make a difference. Trying to jump into it with long tedious workouts will not help make it stick or make it enjoyable.

  • Consistency Over Intensity: Focus on building the habit first. As you become more consistent, you can gradually increase the intensity and or duration.

2. Keep It Uncomplicated

  • Avoid Overcomplication: Start with simple exercises that don't require extensive planning or equipment. Focus on basic movements that feel natural and comfortable to your body, fostering a stress-free approach to fitness.

  • Flexibility Is Key: Allow yourself the flexibility to adjust your workout routine as you go. Remember, the best workout is the one you actually do!

3. Make Fitness Fun

  • Explore Different Activities: Try a variety of workouts – dance to energetic YouTube classes, challenge yourself with HIIT sessions, find tranquillity in yoga, or embrace nature with hiking and cycling. Each offers unique benefits and keeps you excited about moving your body.

  • Switch It Up: Keep things interesting by rotating between different types of workouts. You might find a new favourite! I’ve personally gone through multiple workout phases like going to the gym, trying workout classes, CrossFit, yoga, spin classes, HIIT classes, running and now I think back to CrossFit, explore and have fun!

4. Focus on Feelings, Not Metrics

  • Mind Over Matter: Pay attention to how exercise makes you feel mentally and emotionally. Does it relieve stress or create it? Boost your mood or lower it?

  • Beyond the Scale: Instead of focusing solely on weight loss or calories burned, center your workouts on building strength and endurance, prioritizing your mental health. Remember, the only constant in life is change; your weight and body will naturally fluctuate. So, avoid making exercise conditional on something as variable as your physical appearance.

5. Create a Positive Environment

  • Music Matters: Creating an energizing and uplifting atmosphere during workouts can significantly enhance your exercise experience. To do this effectively, curate playlists that resonate with your tastes and elevate your mood.

  • Your Space, Your Rules: If you're working out at home, create a space that's inviting and energizing. Start by designating a specific area for your workouts, even if it's a small corner of a room.

Journal Prompts for Intuitive Movement*

  • What are some activities I enjoyed as a child that I can incorporate into my workouts?

  • After exercising, how do I feel mentally and physically?

  • How can I make my workout space more inviting and enjoyable?

  • If my body could write me a message, what would it say?

*Intuitive movement is an approach to physical activity that emphasizes listening to and honouring your body's natural cues and preferences. It's about moving your body in ways that feel good and right for you, rather than strictly following a prescribed workout regimen or exercising for external reasons like weight loss or societal standards.
