Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

Marcus Aurelius once said, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” This means that within every problem lies an opportunity to help you get what you want.

Let me share a personal story to illustrate this.

In 8th grade, I developed an eating disorder, driven by a desire to fit in and feel good about myself. I’m sure many of you can relate. I started eating one apple a day, that’s it. I wanted to be thin like I saw in all the movies and magazines.

By 19, amidst college challenges and a significant breakup, I pursued a career as a personal trainer. My obsession with fitness led to a healthier lifestyle… for a while. But eventually developed into something unhealthy.

And eventually spiraled into binge eating and bulimia.

Which led me to gain over 50lbs. All while fluctuating up and down, going on diet after diet, trying thing after thing, and constantly going up and down in weight. From there snuggled with all this for another 7 years.

But, this struggle became a catalyst for positive change. Having these struggles and this problem led me to realize that other people did too.

I delved into health psychology and built a community to support others facing similar challenges.

This experience, once a problem, birthed a platform to aid thousands of women.

I started helping the women clients I had as a trainer. I started taking what once was something I was ashamed of and hid, and turned it into the fuel and catalyst to help others.

I started sharing and connecting with others. To my surprise, as I shared more, helped others more, and delved deeper, I found myself slowly healing more and more each day, one day at a time.

Over time, the hundreds of hours of research and all the experts I talked to…  it all started to cumulate into a framework that I developed.

It started working not only for me but for the clients I was testing it with.

It was like a snowball, just getting better and better and growing day by day to help more people, and the more it worked the more it reinforced the results.

The Shift:

You see my obstacle became the solution for me beating it.

Your health struggles can be a similar beacon of hope and change, not just for you but for others as well. Your experiences can become a relatable bridge, connecting and aiding others in their journey.

Sharing and Empowering ( how to flip the obstacle on its head )

This approach isn't the only way to leverage your challenges; there are countless methods to transform adversities into aids.

but for today, I encourage you to use your experiences and use them to fuel your recovery and progress.

Use your hardship against itself.

Understanding your experiences can help you help others. Can give it purpose.

When you do you will start to see your motivation increases, your mood, your overall outlook on things.

And when that happens, guess what? you start to make progress because when we feel good and build momentum we tend to keep doing better and better.

So how can you do something today that will propel you into feeling this and making progress?
